Empowering Safety at Gulf Oil: Transforming Incident Reporting with the GoSafe App

Overview

Safety in industries, especially in high-risk environments like oil plants, is a priority. Inspired by the need to ensure safety, the GoSafe app by Gulf Oil was developed to enable employees to quickly report incidents and unsafe conditions in the workplace. The app draws parallels with the Accident Triangle, aiming to mitigate both major and minor incidents by encouraging early reporting of unsafe behaviours and conditions.

This project was conceived with the vision of making incident reporting more accessible and improving the overall safety culture in oil plants. The app bridges the gap between fieldwork and management by ensuring real-time communication about health, safety, and environment (HSE) concerns.

Problem

In large oil plants, incidents like equipment failure or unsafe practices can lead to catastrophic accidents. Gulf Oil had an existing desktop system for reporting incidents, but it lacked accessibility and ease of use for field workers. Employees often had to wait until they were back at their desks to report an incident, leading to delayed action. There was also no mobile solution, which hindered the real-time reporting essential for addressing safety issues promptly.

Accident Triangle

Based on Heinrich’s triangle, GoSafe helps users log minor incidents or near-miss events, preventing major accidents down the line. By enabling instant reporting, the app enhances safety performance and accountability across the workforce.

Users wanted to compare countries across regulatory pillars.

They needed a clear regulatory pathways library to guide them through the process of getting medicines and vaccines approved.

Existing tools lacked clarity in visualizing regulatory data for complex use cases.

What Is GoSafe?

GoSafe is a mobile-first HSE observation and incident-reporting app that allows oil plant personnel to log unsafe behaviors, conditions, and incidents. The app provides instant feedback to managers, helping them assign corrective actions and track the resolution process.

  • Quick Incident Reporting: Employees can report safety concerns or incidents from the field in real-time.
  • Task Assignment: Managers can assign tasks to responsible personnel for corrective actions.
  • Progress Tracking: Users can see the status of open and closed incidents.
  • Manager Insights: Dashboards provide management with real-time data and analytics, helping them make informed decisions about workplace safety.

Challenges

The oil and gas industry has its own set of unique safety protocols and terminologies, which made it challenging to create an intuitive user experience for GoSafe. To overcome this, we collaborated closely with industry experts to understand these requirements and tailor the app’s design to meet the field workers' needs.

Conclusion

The GoSafe app aims to revolutionise incident reporting in oil plants by making it accessible, quick, and user-friendly. By providing real-time updates and instant reporting, the app significantly enhances the safety culture in high-risk industries, reducing accidents and boosting morale.

GoSafe's streamlined process of recording, reporting, and resolving incidents ensures that safety is never compromised, and action is taken before minor issues escalate into serious problems.
